Support Salish: 2017 Kitsap Great Give

Science station challenge

On Tuesday, May 2, 2017 we invite you to support hands-on learning on Puget Sound by making a donation to Salish Sea Expeditions through Kitsap Community Foundation’s KITSAP GREAT GIVE. This unique giving day makes your donation go further through a community matching pool made possible by these sponsors. Each donation is also entered in random drawings for “bonus” gifts and donor prizes that will be selected all day long (from midnight to midnight)!

By making a gift on May 2nd, you will directly support boat-based learning adventures that engage middle and high school students in real-world science investigation, STEM exploration and maritime skills training. Your support helps our youth improve science comprehension, engage their curiosity about and connection to Puget Sound, and build confidence around learning and future career interest.

Tending the jib

Did you know that only 6 out of 100 9th graders nationwide go on to graduate with a college degree in Science, Technology, Engineering or Math (STEM)?

Washington has one of the highest concentrations of STEM-related job opportunities in the country, and yet we lack the local talent pool to fill these jobs.

Salish Sea Expeditions is committed to turning the tide on our STEM literacy deficit and engage students in self-directed learning and research that is both exciting and meaningful. Kids learn best when they can tie their classroom studies to real-world experience, and studies show that students learn best when that learning is hands-on and experiential.

Salish programs give students in grades 5-12 the opportunity to explore Puget Sound while conducting original scientific research of their own design aboard the 61’ sailing research vessel Carlyn. Students are then invited to present their findings at the Salish Student Science Symposium to a gathering of marine scientists, engineers, and educators.

Investigating plankton under microscopes

It is our hope that every student in Washington has a chance to experience a Salish program by the time they graduate from high school.

In 2015 Salish acquired the Elettra III, a larger vessel that will grow our fleet of education vessels and be instrumental in a bold expansion of Salish programs with the goal of serving at least five times the number of students, many of whom live right here in Kitsap County.

Your contribution helps to make possible a unique and meaningful hands-on learning opportunity — one that will live in a student’s memory for a lifetime. Your gift has the power to inspire and inform career choices through real-world STEM and maritime learning.

Thank you for making a difference!

This year, Salish is focusing our “giving day” outreach efforts on the Kitsap Great Give, which is part of a national day of locally-focused giving taking place on May 2. The Kitsap Foundation community giving pool enables your dollars to go further than gifts made at other times of the year.

Salish has the privilege of serving communities throughout Puget Sound, including a significant number of students from King County and the greater Seattle region. We are also registered as a recipient of Seattle Foundation’s giving day on May 10 if you prefer to participate in Give Big. You can learn more about that event here.

Visit the FAQ section at Kitsap Great Give here. If you have any questions about making a donation to Salish Sea Expeditions through either of the May giving days, please contact Maria Drury, Development Officer, at 206.780.7848 ext. 4 or maria [at]
