It was a cool and crisp October morning when the bus with the Rainier Scholar students pulled into the parking area of the Elliot Bay Marina.  In a short amount of time the students were headed down to meet the crew of the S/V Carlyn and venture out onto the main basin of Puget Sound.

The day was full of science and sailing. The student team formulated a hypothesis to test while on the marine water.  The staff mentored the use of the equipment to sample the water for a variety of parameters including temperature, salinity and turbidity.  They also explored the world of the plankton communities collected in nets and viewed through microscopes.
