Metro Montessori Middle, Day 1, April 2015

Trip Day: Day 1
Location: Sucia Island
Name(s): Water Watch
School/Grade: Metro Montessori Middle
Do you have any interesting stories about today….
The Water Watch dropped a paper into the water while underway and the Carlyn crew retrieved it, showing off their rescue skills! The Water Watch also went on a hike to the “China Caves” and learned a bit about the history of immigrants being hidden on the island, and took an evening row around Echo Bay. On which they experienced various styles of rowing and saw a few seals.
Any favorite wildlife sightings, quotes, games to share?
The Wind Watch saw porpoises! We all saw various seals, all of whom are named Skittles. We played some intense rounds of Big Booty while waiting for our phytoplankton nets to collect plankton.
Describe the anchorage or moorage where Carlyn is right now:
We are anchored at Sucia Island in Echo Bay. The Water Watch (Juliana, Ben, Rohan, Claire, Max M, Andrea, Zoe, Mia, Zahra, and Sara) will be sleeping on the boat and the Wind Watch (Stanley Max, Kai, Meg, Hannah, Eleanor, Tyler, Johnny, Ellie, Dylan and Jon) is camping on shore.
Today’s weather:
Extremely sunny and kind of warm when we’re not underway!
Describe highlights from today’s science and sailing watches:
We started our experiment today, collecting water and plankton samples and learning about the equipment and methods used to measure the amount of copper in the water, and the amount of plankton present as well. We also started learning about the parts of the sailboat and how to operate the equipment onboard.
Do you have any questions, concerns, or expectations for tomorrow?
Looking forward to collecting more samples and being to analyze the samples we have, and getting into the groove of the sailing life and working towards being able to operate the equipment more independently!
