For Immediate Release

Seattle, WA. — More than 100 high school students participated in a day of experiential learning at Seattle Maritime Academy on Thursday, March 30. The event was sponsored by Seattle Maritime Academy and the Youth Maritime Collaborative (YMC). Bainbridge Island-based nonprofit Salish Sea Expeditions was among organizations on hand to introduce students to maritime career opportunities, which drive a key economic sector for our region.

Salish Sea Expeditions educators led marine science lessons aboard one of the Maritime Academy vessels and a weather monitoring exercise on the pier.

Engaging high school students in maritime career exploration is a key part of Salish Sea Expeditions’ mission. Salish is also a member of the YMC.

About the Youth Maritime Collaborative

The Youth Maritime Collaborative (YMC), an informal organization made up of 12-14 maritime industry companies, educational institutions, nonprofits, community service providers, and public agencies, was established to help address the maritime industry’s need for workers. The goals of the TMC are to generate awareness of and interest in entering the maritime workforce.

About Salish Sea Expeditions

Salish Sea Expeditions serves students in grades 5-12 by inspiring a passion for learning through hands-on marine science exploration, maritime skills training and leadership development aboard a 61 foot sailing research vessel on the waters of Puget Sound. Students design and conduct real experiments, deploy oceanographic equipment, gather and analyze data, plot a course for data collection, handle sails and boat navigation, and work as a team to better understand the environmental health of the Salish Sea and its connected waterways.
